Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory

Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory is yet another one of our favorite fragrant phalaenopsis. Registered in 1982 by Universal's Orchid with permission from hybridizer Rex Smith - Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory is made of (Deventeriana x violacea).  This has proven to be a very successful hybrid, with more than 30 AOS quality awards given to various clones.  Below are a few photos taken by us in the late 1990s - shown here for reference purpose.  In time, we will update the remaining clones in our collection with better photos.

We are pleased to have acquired clone Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory 'Joy's Alba' from Joseph Wu Orchids.  This coloration is achieved by using Phalaenopsis violacea var. alba.  This particular clone received recognition at 17th World Orchid Conference on a mature plant with several flowers.  We like this clone for its clean ivory green color and a hint of pink blush on the lip.  We hope to take a better close-up photo when this clone flowered under our care.  The photo below was taken at Redland Orchid Festival, May 2004 - of a plant that was shipped from Taiwan to US.

Why is Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory fragrant? In addition to having phalaenopsis violacea - a major contributing species parent with pleasant fragrance, Phalaenopsis Deventeriana is a primary hybrid between amabilis and amboinensis.  Phalaenopsis amboinensis is also a scented species.
