Made my first cross today!

I don't actually know if this cross has taken yet, but I stuck some fuscata pollen (previously frozen) into a coerulea bellina this morning. Will update in a few weeks to see if this worked.

Parents are not super studs but I'm still curious to see what they are able to produce...

Awesome, theshatterings. That bellina is beautiful. And, yes, please keep us updated. My fingers are crossed for you. If it doesn't take the first time, try, try again.

The cross didn't take, unfortunately. I suspect my blue bellina is aneuploid, because I tried to self it twice and those didn't take either. I'll try again next year though!

I wouldn't jump into that conclusion quickly. Many years ago I had no luck getting my awarded Phal bellina 'Deep Purple' HCC/AOS to breed. It was a large plant. I got it to breed eventually after allow the flower 4 days after open to use its pollen.

Another example is Phal bellina 'Chen' (now awarded AM/AOS). This cultivar has been cloned and there are various plants in the trade. Most have streak and color break - just awful. But some have gorgeous flowers. Like the one Pat in Canada got awarded with 5 flowers.

Anyway, I know a clone of 'Chen' is now breeding with 'Joy' AM/AOS. Also a couple source in Taiwan have said they got this plant to breed. The flower is so nice that we thought it could be 3n or 4n.

My point is that you just have to keep trying. Some plant may not be ready this time (season). There are other factors that are environment related, or plant's health, growing condition.

so just try, or give up. your choice. Until we have a 'practical' way to get each plant counted. You can just try. I can't imagine trying once or twice and consider the results conclusive.

I have quite a few things coming into bloom soon--some within a week, others might take a month or two. I will try to get it together and post pictures of these as they flower. Very nearly all of them came from a friend of mine, Andy Easton, and are species or primary hybrids, with one near-primary. They have all done well for me, and some are throwing plantlets, too. Might be useful for you, theshatterings. :)

It may be that the freezing of the pollinia played a role in the failure. I have always seen recommendations of refrigeration, not freezing.

By the way, that cross was registered in 2007 as Phal Fuscabell.

Yeah freezing pollen has always failed for me. Refrigerated has done ok if not stored too long and with no humidity.

Refrigeration at 4C was good advice. I think the cross worked this time around : D
