F8-6 Phal Pylo's Sweet Orange

Post by peterlin » Sun May 02, 2010 12:22 pm

Phal (Katie Morris 'Peter Lin' X Yungho Gelb Canary 'Joseph Wu')

This is the first to flower from this hybrid I made. This plant was flowered by Tom Harper.

Positive traits -

Flower has good color, pleasing fragrance, lip is a showy pink color. There is a hint of orange, art-shade color from this combination of purple and yellow flower.

Undesirable traits -

2nd flower (pictured below) has streaks - color break. Color is not as strong as pod parent Katie Morris.

I received an e-mail from Russ Vernon.

I did bloom one Katie Morris x Yung-Ho Gelb Canary but unfortunately,
didn't get a picture. It was orange with lilac in the center. It was also
fragrant.

I hope you are well and my best as always,
Russ

Congrats to Russ and TOm for flowering this exciting cross, and to you Peter as the hybridizer. Looking forward to many more as this was about what I was afraid of. This looks like many of the Katie Morris we have seen, I recall seeing many with color break/streaks, etc. I was hoping for YGC to be dominant, but take on some of the color from the pod parent and was also hoping for more rounded segments. Fragrance should be nice though and surely their will be some great flowers from this cross. I also suspect these will be good growers overall.

This is for my information

Got a feedback from Russ

If by color break you mean the very thin white streak up the dorsal? No. I
know we would prefer such a thing not to be present, but I don't think that
is a flaw, really.

My flower was about 80% the central "lilac" color of yours. The margins of
all segments were the color of the area adjacent to the green/tan tips of
your petals. Orange with some brown mixed in. It was a bit fuller and
fragrant.

Does the color break suggest viral infection?

I would suggest culture and compatibility of parents. The plant looks to be in great health and I would flower it again to see if streak persists.

F8-6 Phal Pylo's Sweet Orange(Katie Morris X Yungho Gelb Can

Post by peterlin » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:58 pm

This cross has been named Phal Pylo's Sweet Orange

Tom Harper brought these 3 plants to show me their color. Wow. Color looks fantastic. It's hard to pick a favorite. So Tom is keeping them all for now.

Very nice.
Read all about my adventures in Going Postal and Making Money by Terry Pratchett.
Oh, did I mention I'm a horrible speller?
I have pallens to trade, anyone interested?
