Deflasking - Pot the Agar with Seedlings????

Post by Pete » Wed Nov 02, 2011 6:01 pm

Evidently there are a good many Paph growers that pot the AGAR and the baby seedlings into their growing mix when deflasking. Supposedly the agar washes away in a couple of months and the seedlings never stop growing - - easier transition from flask to outside of flask.

Does anyone use this technique for Phals? What has been your experience?

Pete,

I deflask my phal seedlings with the normal procedure, washing the agar away and then planting them in seedling mix.

I would NOT recommend planting phal seedling with the agar left.

By the way, my agar is so soft, it would fall away when breaking the flasks (and I do not break the flasks - they cost money. My flasks use stopper No 10, so I can get out the plants easily without breaking the flask).

I agree with Helmut.

I try to get the agar off because its full of sugar which bacteria and fungus love. You might not have any trouble, but I see it as a hazard for root rot.

I don't get crazy trying to get every single bit off, but I don't leave big chunks of it there.

Yes, it does promote bacteria/mold growth. The last phals I deflasked, I didn't wash away all the agar, and a dark fuzzy growth appeared about 10 days later only on and near the agar. I then removed the agar and treated it with Consan/Physan antifungal spray. So it's a good idea to carefully remove all of it before potting the seedlings.

Pete you can plant with a little bit algar if you use bark mix
I would remove most algar if you use all moss like me
