Small greenhouse for beginners.

Post by Kipper » Sun Jun 25, 2017 6:18 pm

Last summer I really needed more room to continue my obsession so I built my first greenhouse. I had a very tight budget so decided to purchase a small 'kit' and alter it to my own needs. Total for my finished 6'6" x 8'6" greenhouse was less than $650.00. The kit, An Abba walk in greenhouse, Amazon, $169.00, has reinforced poly walls which will have to be replaced every couple of years. I installed a Frigidaire 5000 BTU window unit, Lowes, $129.00 and to counteract the fact that the air conditioner would pull moisture from the air I also have a Honeywell HCM-710 humidifier, Amazon, $38.00. The greenhouse kit was only 6'7" tall so I built a 12"tall base to add a little extra height. For heat I purchased a Dr. Greenhouse DR218- 1500 watt greenhouse heater, Ebay, $105.99. Excellent heater made for greenhouse use.Heater, AC, and humidifier are controlled by Bayite Temp and Humidity controllers, Amazon, $28.50. I made the door out of two old wood frame windows from a yard sale. Had to do a lot of tree trimming and totally remove a couple afterwards. The first year in the greenhouse has been excellent with no insurmountable problems. Here are some pics of the building of the GH. Kipper

Quite agreed: I envy your engineering/carpentry/masonry skills. They will serve you well when you design and construct your 25' x 96' greenhouse (c'mon -- you know that this obsession only gets worse with time!...) :D Meanwhile, indeed that is a lot of very helpful detail for people needing/wanting a small greenhouse; I will remember where this page is stored for future reference.
