Shade house advice

Post by ThisSideofParadise » Sat Apr 04, 2015 7:21 pm

I'm looking for advice regard shade houses. I'm contemplating building a shade for my phals during the summer months. I live in canada and we get warm humid summers with ~14 hours of strong sun. Thing is I've never grown a phal outdoors, I do however grow tons under lights so I'm not phal noob just an outdoor noob.
So how sun many hours should I be aiming for?
What % of shade cloth should I use?
Can phal take any amount direct sun light? Or does all light have to be filtered.

Of course anyone that grows in a greenhouse with shadecloth could also reply, but could you add that type of glazing you use.

A gentleman near me is using 90% but that sounds like its a little too dark, thoughts?

Indirect, diffused light only to avoid leaf burn. Exceptions are morning light (but that is seasonal). Here in Texas winter morning light doesn't burn - but now morning light is getting too hot if there is no breeze.

I use 2 shade cloth. One is 60-70% over the greenhouse roof. Inside I have the same 60-70% shade.

Peter so that's 60/70% then your glazing (prob glass at 10% light reduction) then another 60/70%.

So does the 90% sound like what I should try?

I like two shade cloth. So you can remove one if necessary. I would start with 75 percent and add to it if you need to.

Well I order 73% 16ft x 10ft. The plan is to build a 16ft long table with two shelves with a back wall for mounted plant.
I'll post pictures when I start the build

Started this project a little this summer but our conditions have not been ideal
I grow my orchids mostly indoors but I never get that blistering summer heat in my grow room. To correct this, we built an orchid shade house, some of my picky hot growing species will be summering outside.

We finished the structure yesterday and put the shade cloth on(not in the photos) and I’ll be testing the DLI readings for the next couples days.
The Shade house is a 10×3 wide bench with 10×4 ft of hanging room.

Looking good. Waiting to see plants in it. I would probably screen in this enclosure to keep insects away.

The shade house is full and most of the plants are loving it. However my Phal lowii's have decided they thinks its was winter and dropped all there leaves, probably do to the chilly nights.

Looking good. Nothing beats a bench full of happy phals.
