I just came upstairs from the basement and the humidity was at 50% on the way up to 60%. I put plastic over the doorway and put my humidifier inside with a fan. The plastic is actually holding fairly well against the door frame. It's OK if my basement gets a little humid for a few days. It would take weeks maybe months at high humidity to cause any damage. Also, I'm too lazy to keep water in the thing to maintain the humidity at the levels it would need to do much damage in the entire basement. I had to get something done. The buds on one of my favorite plants are swelling like I watered with Viagra.

The humidifier only took a few minutes to get from 43% to 50%, and then it stopped because I had it set wrong. So since it stopped hopefully that is a good sign that there is not much leakage. and I won't be run to death filling it up.

Now comes the big challenge. I've always had low humidity and watered and potted for plants that dried out quick. When my plants take more than 2 days to dry out, I'm going to start freakin about rot. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know many of you probably water only once a week maybe. How do you avoid the rot?

I water once to twice per week, just depending on what the weather was like, how quick my plants dried out, etc. I like to water once, then mist every other day with a pump sprayer. I have a nice one that puts out a very fine mist. So, this helps maintain humidity and keeps plants evenly watered. I also like to let them dry out more in winter, now with spring coming my plants are throwing new roots and seeking water/fert. I keep my humidity high though, ranging from 60-80% depending. I think your sety-up will prove very effective. I might overwater from time to time, but I use 2 fans that blast over my plants. Rot has never been an issue for me.

Ben,

Good air movement is really the key to preventing any fungal problems. Your plants will probably be happier taking longer to dry out. During the winter when its cooler I only water once a week. As the temp goes up I start watering twice a week if the orchids need it. I don't know what medium you are growing in, but if you are finding that your plants are staying wet, then you may need to try something that drains a little better and gets more air. We all have different things that work specifically for our own growing conditions. Just watch your orchids and let them tell you what they need now that you have a different growing environment.

Best,

Rob

Hey Ben,

The gh looks good. I did the same thing in my basement in northern virgina. I also had sheetrock behind the plastic so that if keeps everything in there. For humidity, I used a misting system that would mist the entire area (warm water) every hr for 3 secs. My humidity was about 75-80 and I had one light.

I did that for about 2 years and had really good luck with it. I wish you the best of luck with this!!

Rob

Wow, and I thought my Hydro-Hut was crowded! :-) Lots of plants!

Looks really good, I see a few really nice flowers there! When do you begin putting together the 2nd grow space in that basement? I have to suggest a large ebb and flo table for that one! :D
